What Occurs in the Brain during a Chiropractic Adjustment?

Research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Thera-peutics in 2007, shows how chiropractic helps affect brain and nerve system function. The New Zealand Chiropractors Association states, “Ground-breaking research has, for the first time, identified the actual changes that occur in the body, the nervous system and the brain during chiropractic spinal adjustments.”

The study demonstrates that chiropractic care sends signals to the brain that change the way the brain controls muscles. Researchers commented, “The process of a spinal adjustment is like rebooting a computer. The signals that these adjustments send to the brain, via the nervous system reset muscle behavior patterns.” This is the first time that anyone has used EEGs to prove that there are definite changes to the way the brain processes information after chiropractic care.

Can Chiropractic Support a Condition Like Depression?

A research study published in the November 7, 2005 issue of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, showed a positive result in the care of individuals with depression. For the purpose of this study subjects were selected on the basis of being over 18 years of age and having depression noted in their medical history file. Fifteen participants completed the study. The subjects of this study were given a standardized test known as the Beck Depression Inventory (aka BDI-II) both before and after receiving specific chiropractic care for correction of Nerve pressure (subluxations.) The results showed a significant improvement of the average BDI-II scores of the group. On an individual basis, eleven participants experienced marked improvement; two had minimal improvement while only 2 participants scored worse on the follow up test. The researchers noted that this research tested and supported the hypothesis that the chiropractic correction of Nerve pressure (subluxations) reduced the symptoms of depression.

Studies using the electroencephalogram (EEG) show that before and following a chiropractic adjustment those areas of the brain that produce neurotransmitters demonstrate more normalized brain wave maps and increased Alpha waves, associated with a relaxed or meditative states.
